Steven Smith

Steven “Stevie” Smith (born 30 August 1985) is a Scottish professional footballer currently playing for Scottish Premier League club Rangers.

Smith, a left sided defender, made his Rangers debut against Hearts in October 2003 but had to wait until the winter of 2005-06 to establish himself in the team. He made his Champions League debut against Villarreal CF on 22 February 2006. Smith signed a two-year contract extension in January 2006.

Smith was in line for his first Scotland appearances in the double header of 2008 UEFA European Football Championship qualifying matches against France and Ukraine in October 2006 after the absence or withdrawals of Gary Naysmith, Jackie McNamara, Ian Murray, Mark Wilson, Graeme Murty and Kevin McNaughton, but he was ruled out with a thigh injury.

Despite Rangers’ poor results and performances, Smith started the 2006-07 season impressively and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win over Dunfermline Athletic on 11 November 2006, as well as being named Man of the Match.
