Allan McGregor (born January 31, 1982, in Edinburgh) is a professional football goalkeeper currently playing for Scottish Premier League club Rangers. McGregor signed for Rangers in 1998 and was touted as an excellent goalkeeping prospect. His high hopes were put on hold when he injured his wrist during a youth match, somewhat stunting his development.
He is currently the second-choice goalkeeper at Rangers, with new signing Lionel Letizi being ahead of him. Other goalkeeper Stefan Klos is currently injured and missed the start of the 2006/07 campaign, giving McGregor a chance to push for first team action.
McGregor has spent time at clubs on loan; St Johnstone, for whom he kept six consecutive clean sheets, being the first. He spent the 2005/06 campaign on loan at Dunfermline Athletic.
On 8th August, 2006, it was announced McGregor was free to find a new club .
In early September, however, first choice goalkeeper Lionel Letizi suffered a calf injury, giving McGregor a chance of a run in the first team. During this run he played his first ever European game, keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Molde F.K. in the UEFA Cup .
During the second leg game against Molde FK, at Ibrox, McGregor pulled off a number of fine saves and the home fans chanted his name. He was awarded Man of the Match . After McGregor’s string of impressive performances, he was named SPL Player of the Month for September 2006 .
Despite impressing in the absence of first choice goalkeeper Letizi, McGregor was dropped after the former Paris St Germain player returned from injury. An error by Letizi in a 1-0 home defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle led to many fans calling for McGregor to be reinstated in goal. However manager Paul Le Guen remained faithful to the French goalkeeper and Letizi continued to play in the subsequent matches.
Despite having limited first team opportunities, and reported interest from Premiership club Sheffield United, McGregor signed a new contract on 27 October 2006, keeping him with the club until 2009 .
