The original South of Scotland Football League was created in 1892-93 by 5th Kirkcudbrightshire Rifle Volunteers F.C., Queen of the South Wanderers F.C., Mauchline F.C., Cronberry Eglinton F.C., Lugar Boswell F.C., Springbank F.C. and Lanemark F.C. The competition was abandoned and no championship was awarded.
Scottish Football (Defunct Leagues)
The present South of Scotland Football League was formed in 1946 and currently features these clubs:
Abbey Vale F.C., Annan Athletic F.C. ‘A’, Crichton F.C., Creetown F.C., Dalbeattie Star F.C. ‘A’, Dumfries F.C., Fleet Star F.C., Mid Annandale F.C., Newton Stewart F.C., Nithsdale Wanderers F.C., St. Cuthbert Wanderers F.C., Stranraer Athletic F.C., Threave Rovers F.C., Wigtown & Bladnoch F.C..
These clubs are not usually allowed to enter the Scottish Cup, although some, such as Dalbeattie Star, Threave Rovers and St. Cuthbert Wanderers, meet the ground standards required for this competition or did so in the recent past.
The Challenge Cup is the main cup and it has been played since 1891, some Scottish Football League clubs also enter.
