The Scottish League Cup is a football competition open to all Scottish Football League and Scottish Premier League members. At present it is officially known as the CIS Insurance Cup owing to the sponsorship deal in place with Co-operative Insurance. The competition, like the Scottish Cup, is of straight knockout (single elimination) format, although originally it had ‘mini-leagues’ leading to a knockout stage, somewhat like the modern-day UEFA Champions League. The cup started in 1947 when Rangers beat Aberdeen in the first final.
Celtic are the current holders after defeating Dunfermline Athletic 3-0 at Hampden Park on March 19, 2006.
Currently, the domestic television and radio rights are held by BBC Scotland.

1. ^ a b c The 1945-46 competition was not competed for by all clubs, owing to wartime restrictions, and does not usually count towards official records, often being referred to as the ‘Southern League Cup’. However, Aberdeen certainly include it on their honour roll.
